This is a transmissive twisted nematic liquid crystal module with an active matrix backplane. A thin film transistor behind every sub pixel switches the voltage across a small liquid crystal cell; without voltage the molecules twist and rotate polarised light, with voltage they stand up and block it. Two crossed polarisers turn the cell into a light valve, and four white LEDs behind a reflector and diffuser supply 600 nits. The ST7789P3 controller carries its own frame memory, so the host writes a rectangular window over 4-SPI instead of streaming a full picture. The 76 x 284 grid on a 14.7972 x 55.2948 mm area gives a narrow canvas: 76 columns carry one large numeral plus a unit, 284 rows allow a scrolling list. Pixel pitch is 0.1947 mm, and the TN alignment is set to the 12 o'clock direction, which defines the highest contrast angle.

The bar format serves products that show a column of information. Wearable straps put a value above a label, handheld meters show a measurement with its unit and a battery symbol, cycle computers stack speed over distance, portable testers list a reading plus a pass mark, and slim appliance panels show a mode and a timer. A wider 4:3 panel would force either a bigger housing or wasted side margins.

Five properties matter. The 600 nit transmissive backlight keeps the readout visible in daylight, where a reflective panel depends on ambient light. A 2.36 mm stack at 5 g drops into a wrist or pocket housing without a metal frame. Active matrix drive holds grey levels stable as the battery discharges, so a gauge does not dim as the cell drains. Onboard frame memory lets a small MCU drive the panel with modest RAM. And two terminations on one glass, a 10 pin 0.6 mm solder tail or an 8 pin 0.5 mm plug, serve both sealed and serviceable designs.

The module displays colour graphics, text rows, icons and simple animation, with every pixel addressable through a windowed write. Brightness follows PWM on the LED rail, so one panel runs at full output outdoors and low duty in a dark room, and partial refresh updates a single number without resending its neighbours.

Bring-up runs in five steps: solder or plug the tail and confirm both rails, send the ST7789P3 initialization table with the matching colour order, define the address window, stream pixels over 4-SPI, then enable the backlight. For a vertical readout, rotate the window rather than the image in software.

Three cautions apply. The TN cell is optimised for 12 o'clock, so a panel read from below loses contrast and eventually inverts; mount it to the natural viewing angle. Keep LED current within rating and surface temperature below 70 C, because the polariser degrades before the liquid crystal. Handle the glass edge carefully, as the polariser film scratches easily.
