1.54 Inch 200x200 E Ink Display Module SSD1681 Driver 4-SPI Low Power Smart Label Screen

This small electrophoretic panel uses the same physics as a reader screen. Microcapsules hold a clear fluid with charged white and black pigment; a voltage moves one colour to the visible side, and when the field is removed the particles remain, so the image is stored physically and needs no refresh power. The surface reflects ambient light, so contrast comes from the pigment rather than a backlight. This 1.54 inch module puts a 200x200 array on a 27 x 27 mm active area with the SSD1681 driver over 3-wire or 4-wire SPI. One 31.8 x 37.32 x 0.98 mm outline covers three colour builds: black and white, black plus red, and black white red yellow.

Shelf labels show a price and a barcode. Bin markers show an aisle and a part number. Conference plates show a name and a company. Medical sample tags show an identifier and a test code. Asset plates show a serial number and a service date. Each message is short, rarely changes, and must be readable with no power source nearby.

Three colour builds on one outline is the practical advantage: an integrator qualifies a single housing, a single tooling set and one firmware image, then sells plain and promotional variants without a redesign. The SSD1681 sequences waveforms internally, so the host only pushes pixels. The 0.98 mm profile and 14.3 mm FPC suit shallow label shells. And the dual supply, VDD 1.8 V with VCI 3 V, lets a low voltage microcontroller talk to the panel while the driver runs from a higher rail, which matters in a battery tag where every millivolt counts.

The module draws a 200x200 image in up to four pigment colours, accepts 3-wire or 4-wire SPI commands, runs a full refresh for a new layout and a partial refresh for a text edit, and holds the last frame with zero current until the next write. Deep sleep mode reduces the driver to microamp standby, so a tag can sit for months between updates.

Bring-up: socket the 24 pin FPC, apply VDD 1.8 V and VCI 3 V, send the SSD1681 power-up and panel setting sequence, load the frame buffer, then issue a full refresh. Switch to partial refresh for price or count updates, and park the driver in deep sleep between events. Always follow a full power interruption with a full refresh, since a half-written partial frame leaves a visible band.

Keep within 0 to +50 C in operation, since cold slows pigment movement and lengthens the refresh. Avoid bending the FPC at the stiffener, handle under ESD protection, do not press the film with tools, and keep the edge seal away from solvent. Repeated full refreshes in a short window should be avoided to preserve contrast uniformity.
