A retail price board is judged by how little it costs to keep true. Electrophoretic film answers that: microcapsules hold charged pigment, the UC8179 brings black, white, red or yellow particles to the surface, and the pigment remains when the field is removed. A promotion stays on the shelf with no current, so only the update costs energy. At 7.5 inch the panel is large enough to serve as a category header rather than a single price: the 800x480 array on a 163.2 x 97.92 mm area at 0.204 mm pitch carries a product family name, three prices, a unit price line and a red or yellow promotional flash. The module runs from 3.3 V over 3-/4-wire SPI, weighs 44 g and is 1.1 mm thick, so it mounts in a shelf header or a hanging frame.

Supermarket category headers show a family name and a promotion band. Electronics aisles show a model and three price points. Pharmacy end caps show a reimbursed price. Furniture showrooms show a range and a finance line. Each replaces a printed header a store reprinted every campaign.

The refresh economics are the first advantage: a category header that changes weekly costs one refresh per week, and the rest of the time it draws nothing, so the panel outlives many printed runs. The 7.5 inch area replaces a paper header plus a separate promotion card, which removes a printing and fitting task per campaign. Four colours in one refresh let a red clearance band sit above black prices without a second label. And 3.3 V with a 0.5 mm FPC fits the same controller board a store already uses for smaller tags.

The module shows names, price tiers, unit pricing and colour promotion bands, accepts SPI data, refreshes fully for a campaign change and partially for a single price, and keeps the last image if the store network drops. Partial refresh matters in a chain of thousands of panels: a one line correction should not force a full repaint across an aisle during trading hours.

Deployment: fit the header frame, connect the FPC, apply 3.3 V, reset, load the UC8179 table for 800x480, set the window, write the frame and refresh. Schedule campaign pushes outside opening hours, because a large panel refresh is visible to shoppers. Verify the panel orientation against the 800x480 order, since a swapped address shows a clipped layout rather than a blank screen.

A 7.5 inch panel in a shelf header is exposed to trolleys: mount it behind a lens or recess it, because a direct knock chips the edge, and an edge chip spreads into the image. Keep within 0 to +40 C, away from oven or bakery heat, and keep cleaning sprays off the film edge. Never interrupt a refresh, and never stack panels without separators in the stockroom.
